The Problem

Money doesn't live in one app - mobile money, a couple of bank accounts, a SACCO, shares on the NSE, and what a cousin still owes from last month. Generic budgeting apps don't know what a chama contribution or an electricity token is, and they force budgets into calendar months when pay dates rarely land on the 1st. Most people reach month-end with no real picture of where they stand.

What I Built

Designed Pesalytics around the actual Kenyan financial stack - every account and wallet in one list, budget periods tied to real pay dates instead of the calendar, and localized categories for things generic apps miss entirely. Unit trusts, NSE shares, SACCOs, chamas, and crypto are tracked side by side as real holdings, not an afterthought, and a dedicated debts module tracks direction - what you owe vs. what you are owed - so it never gets confused with a bill. Net worth updates the moment anything changes, so it stays one number worth trusting instead of five apps worth guessing at.

01 - Research

Mapped the Kenyan financial reality: multiple account types, informal savings groups (chamas), mobile money as the default rail, pay dates that rarely land on the 1st. Generic finance apps don't model any of this - Pesalytics needed categories and flows that reflect how money actually moves.

02 - Data Model

Designed the schema around flexible budget periods and a clean separation between Bills (due dates, reminders, no money movement implied) and Debts (direction - owed to you vs. owed by you). Getting that boundary right early kept the budget, goals, and transaction layers composing cleanly instead of overlapping.

03 - Feature Scope

Multi-account net worth, investment tracking across formal and informal instruments, and goals that can span one account or several were all first-class from day one - not bolt-ons. Scoped tightly around what a salaried Kenyan actually needs, not a generic personal-finance feature list.

04 - UX

Designed for speed and honesty over polish for its own sake: log an expense as fast as you paid for it, see net worth update the moment something changes, straightforward language throughout with no finance jargon. Sensible defaults reduce setup friction to a couple of minutes.

What Happened

01

Single dashboard consolidates bank, mobile money, SACCO, cash, and investment accounts into one net worth figure

02

Budget periods align to actual pay dates - not forced into the calendar month

03

Investment tracking spans unit trusts, NSE shares, SACCOs, chamas, and crypto - formal and informal side by side

04

Bills carry due dates and reminders; debts carry direction - two genuinely different problems, modeled separately
